What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is minimally invasive surgery  where a telescope is placed through a small hole under the belly button. Carbon dioxide is insufflated into the belly cavity creating a space whereby the organs of the belly can be visualized on a TV screen. Through other small holes (the number depending on the type of surgery) instruments are introduced into the belly in order to perform the surgery.

What are the advantages of laparoscopy?

  1. Major surgery without a large incision
  2. Less pain after surgery
  3. Shorter hospital stay
  4. Return to work sooner
  5. Return to regular activity sooner

What type of surgeries can be performed via the laparoscope?

  • Appendix
  • Gallbladder
  • Stomach acid reflux
  • Take down of scar tissue in the belly
  • Bowel
  • Sterilization (tie tubes)
  • Ovarian
  • Hernias
